    Understanding your IP address

What your IP address reveals, and what it does not.

    4IPv4

Four numbers from 0 to 255 (e.g. 203.0.113.42). Addresses have run out: providers sometimes share one between several customers (CGNAT).

    6IPv6

Eight hexadecimal groups (e.g. 2001:db8::1). Enough addresses for every device on Earth. Your connection may have an IPv4 and an IPv6 at the same time.

    ⌂Public vs local IP

The public IP is your router’s, shared by the whole home. Each device also has a local IP (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x) visible only at home.

    ⌖What your IP reveals

Your provider, your country and an approximate city. Never your name or street address: only the provider can link an IP to a customer, on a court order.

    ↻Static or dynamic IP

Most plans have a dynamic IP that changes from time to time. A static IP is useful to host a server or reach cameras remotely.

    ⌘Find your local IP

Windows: ipconfig. macOS: Settings › Network, or ipconfig getifaddr en0. Android and iPhone: Settings › Wi-Fi › your network.

How to hide your IP address

Four options, from the simplest to the most anonymous. Come back to this page to check the result.

    1VPN

Encrypts all the device’s traffic and sends it out through a server in the country you choose. The most common option. Turn on WebRTC and DNS leak protection.

    2Tor Browser

Bounces your connection through three volunteer relays. Very anonymous and free, but slower and sometimes blocked by websites.

    3Web proxy

Relays one page at a time, with nothing to install. Handy to unblock a site, but does not protect other apps.

    4Mobile network

On 4G/5G your IP is often shared with thousands of users: it changes with each connection and identifies your line less.

    FAQ

    What is an IP address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet, like a postal address. The websites you visit see it so they can send back the pages you ask for. It is assigned by your internet provider and can change, especially when you restart your router or on mobile.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 is written as four numbers (e.g. 203.0.113.42) and has only about 4.3 billion addresses, now exhausted. IPv6 is written in hexadecimal (e.g. 2001:db8::1) and offers an almost unlimited number of addresses. Most recent connections use both.

What is the difference between public and local IP?

The public IP is the one the internet sees: all devices in your home share it. The local IP (often 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) is assigned by your router to each device and is only visible on your network. This page shows your public IP.

    Is the location shown accurate?

No, it is an estimate. The country is almost always right; the city is often correct within a few dozen kilometres, as it reflects your provider’s equipment, not your home. An IP address never reveals your street address.

How can I hide my IP address?

A VPN routes your traffic through a remote server: websites see the VPN’s IP. The Tor Browser gives stronger anonymity but is slower. A proxy often protects only the browser. Then check on this page that no WebRTC leak reveals your real address.

    What is a WebRTC leak?

WebRTC enables video calls in the browser. To set up a direct connection, it may query a server and discover your public address, sometimes bypassing the VPN. The test above checks whether this happens. VPN extensions or browser settings can block it.

How is the privacy score calculated?

It adds up nine checks run in your browser: IP hidden by a VPN (25 points), no WebRTC leak (20), consistent time zone (10), Global Privacy Control signal (10), hidden graphics card (10), IP not blocklisted (10), and three fingerprinting or security signs (languages, screen size, HTTPS, 5 points each). It is a guide, not a full audit.

Is the port scanner legal and safe?

Yes: it only tests your own IP address, the one visiting the page, never anyone else’s. It simply tries to connect to about thirty common ports, without sending or exploiting anything. A “filtered” port is blocked by your router or firewall, which is normal; an “open” port can be reached from the whole internet.

How do I get my IP from the command line?

Type “curl netip.site” in a terminal: only your IP address is printed. For all the details in JSON, use “curl netip.site/json”.
