2. Data processed
| Data | When | Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP address, port, HTTP headers sent by your browser | On every visit | Show them to you. Location and provider are computed on our server from a local database (DB-IP), with no call to a third-party service. Not stored. | Performance of the service |
| Host name (reverse DNS lookup) | On every visit or lookup | Show the name tied to the IP address. Not stored. | Performance of the service |
| Browser and device information (screen, language, time zone, graphics card…) | On every visit | Read and shown only in your browser. Never sent to Netip. | — |
| Addresses discovered by WebRTC | On every visit | Leak test, run in your browser; the result is not sent to us. | — |
| IP address or domain name looked up | Looking up another IP, API | Show the requested information. Not stored. | Performance of the service |
| IP address (hashed) | Lookups, API, contact form | Limit abuse (number of requests) | Legitimate interest (security) |
| Name, email and message | Contact form | Answer your request | Legitimate interest |
| Language (cookie) and theme (local storage) | When you choose a language or theme | Remember your preferences | Function requested by the user |
3. Third-party services your browser contacts
- Google and Cloudflare STUN servers: for the WebRTC leak test, your browser sends them small network requests. They receive your IP address, as with any connection.
- OpenStreetMap and cdnjs (Cloudflare): when the map is shown, your browser loads the map library from cdnjs.cloudflare.com and map images from tile.openstreetmap.org.
- Anti-spam blocklists (Spamhaus, SpamCop, Barracuda…): our server asks them whether the IP address shown is listed. They receive that IP address, nothing else.
- Port scanner: only if you click “Scan my ports”. Our server then tries to connect to about thirty ports of your own IP address. The result is not stored.
- Google Fonts: typefaces.
4. Retention
- Rate-limiting data (hashed IP address): 24 hours at most.
- Hosting technical logs: depending on its configuration, 30 days at most.
- Contact messages: as long as needed to reply.
- Language cookie: 12 months. Theme: until you clear it.
5. Recipients and transfers
Our hosting provider (hosting of the site, sending of emails) and the services in section 3. Our company and these providers are based in the United States. Transfers from the European Union rely on the mechanisms provided by the GDPR (Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified, or standard contractual clauses).
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live (including the GDPR in the EU/EEA and the UK, and the CCPA/CPRA in California), you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to and port your data. To exercise them, write to [email protected]. You may lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. We do not sell or share personal information.
7. Geolocation data
Location and provider come from the DB-IP Lite database (CC BY 4.0 licence). They are approximate and cannot identify a person or their street address.
